Hollywood has been more than happy to cannibalize its own catalog for decades, but some films are considered untouchable, and rightly so. We can have as many new versions of Spider-Man, Batman, or James Bond as we need, but we’ll probably never see a new version. The Godfather, Citizen Kane, die hardor the original star wars trilogy.
Interest in a remake, reboot, or reimagining (in theory, at least) should be entirely creative, but as we all know it’s driven by cold, ringing cash at the end of the day. During the Disney era of star warswe heard completely crazy and completely unfounded rumors that the Mouse House was planning to redo the force awakens, The Last Jediand The Rise of Skywalkerin an effort to right the canonical ship and erase the polarizing trio from continuity.
It’s absolutely crazy like that, but could you imagine if the studio did it for A new hope, The Empire Strikes Backand Return of the Jedi In place? It’s bordering on sacrilege, so it’s no surprise to learn that the simple suggestion made by a lonely Redditor has opened up a hugely controversial box of online worms.
Based on what’s currently in the works for the big screen and Disney Plus, star wars never has to go the remake or reboot route anyway, as the vast universe that’s been steadily expanding for decades has barely been touched in the grand scheme of things as it is. Some things should be well left out, and the original trilogy is definitely part of that equation.
